Championship Cycle Policy

  1. General Regulations
    1. The order of tie-breaks used in qualifying events are:
      1. Head to head
      2. S.B.
      3. ELO
      4. Median
      5. Solkoff
    2. Players qualify out of one event only, but may play in any qualifier they are eligible for.
    3. The fastest time control allowed in a qualifying event is Game/60.

  2. City Championship Qualifying Events
    1. The first class of qualifiers come out of the city championships.
    2. Allowable formats for city championships are:
      1. Ladder Tournament (not recommended)
      2. Round Robin or Double-Round Robin
      3. Swiss tournament consisting of four or more rounds
    3. The number of qualifiers from any tournament are as follows:
      1. Ladder Tournament - ladder leader only.
      2. Round Robin or Double-Round Robin - the top ½ of the Championship section; the top two of the reserve section
      3. Swiss tournament - the top four players of the Championship section
    4. City Championships are normally run sometime during the sometime during the period of January through March.
    5. Participation in a city championship is restricted to those players living within the surrounding ICU Unit unless a commisioner’s exemption has been granted by the ICU.

  3. Unit Championship Qualifying Events
    1. The second class of qualifiers come out of the Unit championships.
    2. The following Units are recognized:
      1. Treasure Valley (Ontario, Oregon - Glenns Ferry)
      2. Magic Valley (Hammett - Rupert)
      3. Upper Valley (American Falls - Driggs)
      4. Long Valley (Donnelly - Coeur d'Alene)
      5. Silver Valley (Wallace - Sandpoint)
      6. Sun Valley (Sun Valley - Ketchum)
    3. The allowable type format for a Unit championship is a four or five round Swiss.
    4. The number of qualifiers from a Unit Championship is four players from the Championship Section.
    5. Unit Championships are normally run during June through August and must be done before Labor Day.
    6. Participation in a Unit Championship is allowed to any player has not been given a black player card.

  4. Conditional Qualifiers
    1. If a player declines to play in the championship, his or her slot is taken by the next highest finisher out of his or her qualifying event.

  5. Championships Final Format.
    1. The format for the Championship Final will be a 16 player elimination match tournament
    2. Each match will consist of four games.
