07.10 - IDAHOANS AT THE INTERMOUNTAIN CHESS OPEN

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Expert Vinh Loc Tran won first place at the Intermountain Chess Open at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City on June 16. He scored of 5½-½.

Vanel Sanchez, frequent vistor to Idaho tournaments Randy Zumbrunnen and Josh Smith finished in a tie for 2nd through 4th places with identical scores of 5-1.

Several Idaho players also attended. Victor Watts finished 4-2; Jershon Laimana scored 3½-2½; Surendra Prajapati had an even score of 3-3; Kenneth Shaw was 3-3; Keven Patterson 3-3; Azubike Angel Emenari 2½-3½; Emily Patterson, 2-4; Katie Ray Patterson 2-4.

2007 Idaho Closed Champion Hans Morrow has moved back to Utah and he finished with 4-2.

This was a very strong tournament with 7 Experts and 5 Class-A players attending. This is in stark contrast to the situation in Idaho where it seems that the higher rated players would rather shave with a chainsaw instead of showing up at any of the local tournaments!

CHEYENNE, WYOMING -- Jesse Cohen and Andrew Smith both finished with 4 points and shared top honors at the recently concluded Wyoming Open. This tournament was held in Cheyenne on May 24-25 and was directed by Brian Lee Walker and Jonathan Ray Fortune.

It is too bad that the Wyoming vs. Idaho Match has been kicked to the curb again. That was a very nice event and is sorely missed.

07.10 - IDAHOANS AT THE 72ND MONTANA OPEN

Posted: 2007.07.10

By: Nomen Nescio

MISSOULA, MONTANA -- Several Idahoans participated in the 72nd edition of the Montana Open. This tournament was held in Missoula on April 21-22, 2007 and was directed by William McBroom and Daniel McCourt.

Spokane area resident John C. Julian won first place with a score of 4½. Three players closely followed with 4 points - Michael A. Murray, Washington; Phil Weyland, Post Falls, Idaho; and Zachary P Countryman, also of Washington.

Post Falls resident Ron Weyland finished with an even score of 2½. Two Boise area players had outstanding results. Luke Harmon finished with 2½ points and gained 56 rating points and scored a victory over Class-A player Jim Hanlen of Alaska. Carl Honor Harmon also scored 2½ points and gained an equally impressive rating gain of 55 points!

There were 35 entries for this tournament and eight(!) players were rated over 1800 - about 23% were Class-A or better. This compares very favorably with the turnout for the Idaho Open held in the same month - 31 players showed up in Pocatello with 4 being Class-A or higher, or about 13%. However, it should also be remembered that the Idaho Open prize fund was much larger and guaranteed.
