2006 TWIN FALLS CITY CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS
Posted: 2006.09.11
TWIN FALLS --The 2006 edition of the Twin Falls City Championship began tonight at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore. There are currently eleven players competing and Glen Buckendorf was scheduled to play, but was forced to withdraw at the last minute. There still is one available entry slot and additional invitations have been extended.
This year’s tournament is a little different in that several players from the Treasure Valley are participating. This required a waiver from the Idaho Chess Union Board as the championship qualifier rules state that players should remain within the geographic area of their home chess clubs, if one is available, to reduce player poaching. This is a return to the rules agreed to by the original Idaho chess clubs in the 1950s and 60s.
This Round Robin event has a time control of Game/90 and time increments (aka cheater clocks) are not used.
Round 1 pairings and results:
- Myers vs. Dugger
- Looney vs. Roland
- Veryschagin vs. Olson
- Shouse vs. Reynolds
- Marshall vs. Bartell
- Barry Eacker - off night
Games will be available when possible. Unlike other chess organizations, the Idaho Chess Union requires that players submit their scores after the round and frankly, if anyone bothers to look at one of my games and figures out how to beat me like a red-headed stepchild in a future game, so much the better!

2006 IDAHO CHESS UNION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES CONTINUE (UPDATE)
Posted: 2006.09.11
The 2006 Idaho Chess Union Championship matches began on Tuesday, April 25 in Boise, and have now substantially been completed.
Unlike the practice of some tradition-bound chess organizations, the participants in this tournaments voted to change the format of this championship tournament from a weekend Swiss to elimination matches. Additionally, all players in this championship event had to score well in one of the preliminary qualifiying events to be allowed to play for the title of Idaho Chess Union Champion.
Some chess parents have expressed distress that their teenagers have not been allowed to play in our events. We too are distressed about those turn of events, but also have concerns about legal liability issues and the problems with social cohesion that might occur if too many young players are dropped off on our doorstop without some controls over the process. The Idaho Chess Union invites any parents with such concerns to contact us at this email address: manager@idahochessunion.com and share your ideas with us.
