10.24 - WEYLAND WINS 2006 SPOKANE FALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON -- Post Falls resident Phil Weyland won the 2006 Spokane Fall Championship with an undefeated 4½-½ score. Weyland’s was held to a draw in the last round by former Boisean John Downes. Downes finished in a tie for 3rd-6th places with a score of 3½-1½.

Annette Weyland, also of Post Falls, had a good finish with a 3-2 score. Even better, she raised her USCF rating by 219(!) points.

Also participating was Ronald Weyland, who finished at 2-3.

10.22 - 2006 WYOMING CLOSED RESULTS

EVANSVILLE, WYOMING -- John Pedry won the 2006 Wyoming Open on September 30-October 1, 2006, with a score of 4-1. The tournament was held at the Shilo Inn in Evansville, Wyoming.

Former Boisean Richard Cohen took third place with a score of 3-2.

Tournament directors were Brian Lee Walker and Allan D Cunningham.

It was rather unfortunate that this year’s edition of the Tri-State match between Idaho and Wyoming was not held due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control. All three previous matches were very enjoyable and the Wyoming players are true chess friends.

10.22 - IDAHOANS AT THE 2006 WESTERN STATES OPEN

RENO, NEVADA -- Several Idahoans played in the most recent edition of the Western States Open. This tournament was held at the Sands Regency on October 8-10.

Dan E Mayers, Sun Valley, had a good result in the Class-A Section and finished in 8th place with a score of 4-2.

Janos Fucsko, Boise, had an outstanding result in the Class-B Section with a score of 4½-1½ and he brought back sixty-nine hard-won USCF rating points. I wouldn’t be too surprised if he didn’t get promoted to Class-A rating very soon! Janos finished in 3rd place and was only defeated by the first place finisher and was held to a draw by the person who finished in second place. Shane Kennedy, also of Boise, finished with a 2-4 score in the Class-B Section.

10.19 - 2006 BOISE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP NOT HELD
TREASURE VALLEY UNIT CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD INSTEAD

BOISE -- As you might have noticed, no Boise City Championship was held this year. Instead, a Treasure Valley Unit Championship, using the same format as the Magic Valley Unit Championship, will be held next spring at a descent site in Boise.

The exact dates for this tournament will be selected to avoid stepping on any Idaho State University or Idaho Chess Association events; however, it is still expected that no matter when this tournament is held, certain individuals involved with the Idaho Chess Association will still be boo-hoo-hooing like hysterical little girls that the poor widdle ICA can’t compete against unrated, no-prize, invitational tournaments run by the big, bad Idaho Chess Union!

10.19 - 2006 TURKEY OPEN IN MISSOULA, MONTANA

MISSOULA, MONTANA -- This year’s edition of the Turkey Open will be held in Missoula, Montana on November 4-5, 2006. The playing site is at the Grant Creek Inn Best Western north on Reserve Street at Exit 101, Interstate 90.

This tournament offers something unusual this year - a senior section. If a sufficient number of players is interested, then a special section for players 55 and older will be organized.

ONTARIO, OREGON -- The chess program at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon, is still going. I try to make it there a couple Saturday afternoons a month. It’s enjoyable and the inmates really appreciate our coming. If you are interested for the occasional Saturday afternoon, let me know. Even a couple times a year would be appreciated. A background check is required first.

Give me a call for info.
