04.01 - STEWART SUTTON, DANIEL VELLOTTI 2007 MVCC CO-CHAMPIONS
Posted: 2007.04.01
TWIN FALLS -- -- Stewart Sutton of Boise ID is the new Magic Valley Chess Club Champion for 2007! Sutton and Co-Champion Daniel Vellotti of Boise finished with identical 3.0/4 scores but Sutton won the First Place trophy on the fourth tie-break. Both Sutton and Vellotti will be listed as Co-Champions on the MVCC plaque and in the Idaho Chess history records. 2007 Idaho State Champion Hans Morrow of Pocatello finished in the Third Place slot with 2.5/4, beating out Garrett Reynolds (2.5/4) and Fred Bartell (2.5/4), both of Twin Falls.
Aleksander Veryschagin of Twin Falls swept the Challenger division of the tournament with a perfect 4.0/4 and will move up to the Championship division in 2008. Second and Third Place went to Sam Seineger (3.0/4, Boise) and Surendra Prajapati (2.5/4, Pocatello) respectively.
The Championship division boasted five A class players, two former Idaho State Champions and the current Idaho State Champion, Hans Morrow. Also attending were 2006 Twin Falls City Champion Steve Hinton, 2006 MVCC Champion Daniel Looney, three-time Idaho Scholastic Champion Daniel Vellotti, and Idaho Chess Association President Jeff Roland. The section was very strong with an average rating of 1758.
The first round saw few surprises with the exception of the draw between Fred Bartell (1831) and Luke Harmon (1579, Boise). Harmon is eight years old and is one of the up and coming "young lions" of Idaho chess.
Round two results showed draws on the top two boards and once again young Luke with the surprise, defeating Jeff Roland (1718, Boise). 2006 MVCC Champion Dan Looney (1678, Meridian) continued to struggle, losing his second game in a row and going on to finish with a disappointing 0.5/4.
Round three was the point at which the strong players took over, with only Victor Watts (1678, Pocatello) able to keep pace with the front runners. The solid win by Stewart Sutton against young Luke put Sutton one - half point in the lead with one round to play, while the four players behind him drew.
Daniel Vellotti scored a nice win against Victor Watts in round four to pull even with Sutton, while Sutton drew with Morrow to secure his victory. This round produced controversy in the game Bartell - Reynolds. With Bartell gaining valuable space against Reynolds, who was desperately low on time, the "insufficient losing chances" rule made an appearance. The claim was rejected as per the rulebook, but confusion surrounding the rule ultimately led to a draw due to unforseeable circumstances. Much controversy surrounds the rule and this incident did little to resolve the debate.
The Challenger division was dominated by Veryschagin, but the second round encounter between Veryschagin and Chris Viveros( 1.5/4, Twin Falls) would have been a draw with correct play by Viveros. Veryschagin soundly defeated his other three opponents en route to his fine victory.
Sam Seineger, another of the outstanding scholastic players from Boise, finished in Second Place with 3.0/4, his only loss coming against Veryschagin in round three. Besides Veryschagin, Seineger was the only player in either section to win three games.
Idaho chess new-comer and ISU student Surendra Prajapati of Nepal was alone in Third Place at 2.5/4. The average rating in the challenger division was 1320.
Many thanks to all the players who took time from their busy schedules to attend this event. Thank you all for the generous donations which will go toward more chess tournaments. Thanks to the Idaho Chess Union and Rocky Mountain Chess for sponsorship and ratings. As always, our thanks to Obenchain Insurance in Twin Falls for the use of the community room.
